At this dialogical seminar, Akani asks a poignant question "Is gender too complex for the colonial imagination?" In today's discourse on transgender education, research, and theory, a predominant influence of white perspectives often confines gender within the boundaries of a colonial imagination.

About the event
Akani Shimange (They/Them) is a dedicated advocate with a strong professional background in Advocacy, Research, Movement Building, and Coordination, with a primary focus on transgender and gender-diverse organising within the broader LGBTIQA+ movement. As a black nonbinary activist, Akani has played a pivotal role in advancing the rights and well-being of marginalized communities, cultivating a substantial network spanning the global south. Even concepts like the gender spectrum, while attempting inclusivity, fall short by overlooking indigenous identities and perpetuating colonial frameworks. This limitation extends to decolonial trans theory, which, despite its intentions, can also be harmful to transgender individuals.
To truly humanize trans people and advance our understanding of gender complexity, it's imperative to challenge and transcend the confines of colonial thought. By critically examining the intersections of race, gender, and coloniality, we can pave the way for more inclusive and emancipatory perspectives on transgender identities
