About the event
The focus of my talk is on land uses and meanings from the perspectives of former labour tenants who were forcibly evicted trom their land but have in recent years gotten it back. I will look at the socially embedded ways in which the former labour tenents distribute land amongst each other and to the outsiders who need it, productive, non-productive, and symbolic uses of land and how these contribute to
their social reproduction. In line with critiques by autonomous feminists, I offer a critique of the productivist approach to land redistribution in South Africa. I de that by drawing from scholarship on social reproduction theory and a distributive perspective on rural livelihoods.
